Presidents' Day Countdown: Books

Presidents' Day by Anne Rockwell:
A cute book that explains what Presidents' Day is and tells the story of what one class does to celebrate it.

What Presidents Are Made Of by Hanoch Piven:

  • Hanoch Piven is an incredible illustrator who uses everyday items to create, look like, and represent the Presidents of the United States. I had the opportunity to be a part of a Skype session with Hanoch Piven. He was a joy to listen to and learn from. After talking to him, the students created their own portraits from objects around the classroom and from their homes. The students also used Hanoch Piven's app, Faces iMake HD, to create  their own simile books!
  •

  • Looking at Lincoln by Maira Kalman:
  • This book follows a little girl on her search to learn about Abraham Lincoln and she finds out many interesting things.
  •

  • George Washington's Birthday: A Mostly True Tale by Margaret McNamara:

George Washington's Teeth by Deborah Chandra & Madeleine Comora:
A unique book on George Washington where the focus lies in how he lost each of his teeth.

Abe Lincoln's Hat (Step into Reading) by Martha Brenner & Donald Cook:
This easy reader tells the story of how Abe Lincoln used to keep all sorts of important notes and papers inside his famous hat.

Abe Lincoln's Dream by Lane Smith:
This funny and touching story tells the journey of one small girl who gets separated from her tour group and ends up in Lincoln's bedroom where she finds the ghost of Lincoln himself.
