My new word for the day is realia! Realia is using real life objects in the classroom to build or connect to students’ background knowledge – a familiar concept but now I have a new word to attach to it!
This video shows first grade teacher, Ali Nava as she uses students’ native language skills to connect to elements of their story. Tortillas are a familiar food but many of her students do not know how tortillas are made. She brought in a metate and tortilla press so they could see for themselves. Simple solution but it makes a big difference!
